The buried light of the nominal IP67 is still leaking? It may be these troubles!
Many people may have such doubts at work. That is to use a buried IP lamp with a nominal IP67 when doing a lot of projects. It is confirmed that there are also test reports that are IP67. Many of them are international brands, but still, there will be water leaks.

So why is the IP67 buried light leaking?
To understand the cause of the leak, you must first understand what IP67 stands for.
People who don’t know what IP67 means can be viewed first: “Landscape lighting | The type of underwater light and application details” “iPhone 7 is IP67, what does IPXX mean?” Click on the topic to read, understand the IP of the fixture waterproof level.
The reasons for the leakage of the buried lamp are summarized as follows:
1 design is not reasonable
2 material defects
3 process defects
4 reasons for installation
1 design is not reasonable
For example, some of the lamps are filled with glue. When the lamps are shipped from the factory, the waterproof level is really no problem, and there will be no water leakage.
However, in an outdoor environment, it will start to age and turn yellow after about half a year, and the lamps will enter the water.
Therefore, the waterproofing of the glue is not reliable, and the waterproof structure is the king.
Teacher Xu said: “Because the unreasonable design of the product is not qualified, it should not exist.”
Some of the lamp covers are not pressed, and the manufacturer does not press a few more points. It is important to know that buried lights are often in an environment that is eroded by water, and it is easy to leak water if the cover is not pressed properly.
There are only 3 screws in such a large luminaire. The distance between the screws is very far. Do you think it is pressed tightly?
Such a lamp cover is not pressed, and it will definitely be tilted up.
So filled with glue, do you think it will be waterproof?
The lighting of this international brand in the picture below does not have glue. Let’s see how many screws are used above?
4 on the left, 4 on the right, 2 on the top 1234567… There are ten screws in total!
The several lamps mentioned above are honestly difficult to pass the IP67 test. And even if you pass the IP67 level test, it doesn’t mean you won’t leak! Defects in the structure of the luminaire can also cause water leakage.
General test: Under a certain temperature condition, the water test is carried out, and the bubble is not leaked for a period of time, even if it passes the IP67 test certification.
However, in the actual work process, the use environment of the lamps is complicated. When the sun is hot, it will become hot. When it rains, it will become cold. It will expand and contract. When the air inside the lamp is turned on, it will expand. When the lamp is turned off, the air will be compressed. Therefore, the effect of such a cycle is called the respiratory effect. The pressure ring of the luminaire will be subject to changes in air pressure caused by the breathing effect, which will cause the buried lamp to leak.
This is the irrational structure of the luminaire, which leads to the durability of the luminaire.
2 materials defects
Defects in the luminaire material cause the lamp to leak.
This is related to the key materials for waterproofing the luminaire. Waterproof nuts, sealants, silicone rings, etc., often perform well when just installed, but the durability is not enough.
The poorer silicone ring is aging in two months. When it is often sun-dried, it will break into the water and go in. This is a premature failure and does not reach the design life.
Even if the apron is not aged, if the silicone strip is not selected, it is not an inorganic material, but the organic material is likely to be affected by the mold, and then it will leak.
So the choice of materials is also very important~
3 process defects
For example, when assembling, the lamp should be mounted to the entire pressing ring of the lamp to be dense. Each screw has its own fixed torque. If it is pressed too tight, it will crush the apron, and the too loose rubber ring will not be tight enough so there will be a fixed torque.
The company that has no design and no conditions is just screwed when assembling, so it is strange to not leak!
Then, if it is a well-known international brand, the lighting design is reasonable, and the materials used are also suitable. Will such buried lights not leak?
Answer is
Of course not!
Still leaking at this time? why? There is only one possibility at this point: the reason for the installation.
4 Reasonable for installation
1 installation is not stable
The general possibility is that the installation is not stable. One side is high and low, plus the pressure of pedestrians or cars. Therefore, the position of the pressed apron will lose its elasticity due to excessive pressure – and then it will leak.
2 “short-term waterproofing”
If the drainage treatment is not good, the lamp will leak when it is soaked for a long time. The IP67 of the buried light represents a short time waterproof. The one that does not leak water for a long time is the IP68 grade lamp – underwater light.
Buried lights can’t be soaked for a long time. When installing buried lights, they often draw such a large sample of installation:
If the buried lamp is soaked in water for a long time, the environment is worse than in the pool. Because the ground is often cleaned with a cleaning agent such as oxalic acid, oxalic acid is corrosive and can invade the lamp to erode the lamp, then it will naturally leak.
Then if the installation is stable, there are also drainage measures. Is this all right and will not leak?
Unfortunately, even if you reach this level, there is still the possibility of underground lights! leak! water!
3 power wiring
Another possibility of water leakage is the power wiring.
Ordinary tape connection is not waterproof, because the water vapor will enter the interior of the lamp along the gap of the tape wrapped around the wire, forming a drop of water mist inside the lamp.
So the reasonable way should be to use a waterproof junction box. The junction box is filled with soft glue, and the soft junction box sinks the thread under the ground and the sleeve is set so that any water vapor will not go in.
Finally, say two more! !!
There are also a lot of buried lights that will leave the two-line waterproof male and female plugs so that the jacket is waterproof when it is tightened.
In fact, it is not waterproof!
In fact, due to the tolerances of the male and female inserts, the quality of the quality and other human factors will lead to leakage from the gap.
Therefore, the insurance method is to put a tape on the outside of the male and female plugs, and put on silicone rubber, which is double insurance.
Old-fashioned lamps need to be tightened during construction. The order of tightening is very particular. They should be tightened one by one in the direction of the screws. Tighten a little bit first – then gradually tighten until all are tight so that it will be pressed tightly.
However, the integrated luminaires now do not need to be screwed.
When installing such a luminaire, you only need to pay attention to the wiring problem. The waterproof work can be handed over to the factory.
The water leakage problem of the buried lamp is either due to the unqualified quality of the lamp itself, or the water leakage due to the installation.
Knowing the reasons for the leakage of buried lights, how to deal with the leakage of buried lights you should be able to get it!
